Description of the application

The solar cooling plant has been installed during 2007 in an office and laboratory building in Barcelona.
This building is part of the Public Health Agency of Barcelona (PERACAMPS building). The building has a large thermal demand all year long due to its function as laboratory and office.

General description of the system

The system consists of a LiBr absorption chiller with 35 kW of cooling capacity, 82 m² of selective flat-plate collector, two 3 m³ tanks to store the solar production and 1 m³ tank to store the cooling production. This system will contribute to cover 20% of the total thermal demand of the building (cooling, heating and domestic hot water). The remaining demand will be covered by the former installation with a gas boiler and an electric vapour compression chiller. The installation has been designed including two tanks that can be connected in parallel or in series. Depending on the season of the year, different control strategies are possible to drive the solar production towards heating demand or cooling demand. The two tanks can work in parallel with two different set-point temperature levels, particularly during spring and autumn when both heat and cold demand are required during the same day in the building.
